6 Hit Songs to Beat the Staffing Blues

6 Hit Songs to Beat the Staffing Blues Music is  a universal language  with the  ability to alter moods, evoke emotions and bring people together.  The right song  can also help us through the toughest of times. Yes, I am talking about the  trials and tribulations that come with hiring,  firing and retaining talent! Have you ever had your best  employee resign, completely out of the blue? Ever had your next superstar hire pull out at the last minute before joining? Ever  had your time wasted by an indecisive candidate who strings you along then flicks you away?  Ever been burned by one of your workers behaving badly under your representation? Been left high and dry with no budget to recruit?  I could go on forever the struggle is real. We know that the recruitment process  is  an  emotional roller coaster  full of very high highs and extra  low lows. When the  flurry of feelings become  too hard to handle, we need to put the headphones in, close our eyes and let the power of music  take over. Heres what you need to listen to when: 1. Your candidate delays their decision Listen to: You Keep Me Hangin’ On by  The Supremes Being strung along is one of the most annoying experiences to go through. When youre  neither here nor there, the  best  place you can go is to your  lounge room  by yourself so you can blast  The Supremes through surround sound. The refrain here (you just keep me hangin on)  is so to-the-point  it should be treated like a chant.  Try singing along as loudly and as meaningfully as possible  to get all of those frustrations off your chest. Just make sure no one is around  and  repeat this activity every day until your candidate makes their decision. 2. Your candidate  rejects your offer Listen to: Someone Like You Adele This is a bad  situation, Im so sorry to hear. Someone Like You really drives home the message that  even though what you once had  was perfect and full of promise, there will still be someone else. To reap the maximum benefit from this song, its probably best you take a solemn walk around town while you listen to it,  to  help you reminisce about what could have been and then clear your mind. Watch how Adele does it below: 3. A  great employee leaves Listen to:  Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead OConnor The clue is in the name here. They were  the most capable and loyal employee youve ever had working for you. Sure, you wish them the absolute best in their future. You just wish that their future was with you. This tune is a good one to belt to. It would be best to listen to this one in the shower as the echoey acoustics will help take the edge off your high notes. 4. A  not-so-great employee leaves Listen to:  Happy by Pharrell Williams Happiness is a very strong, overwhelming emotion at times, just like sadness, so its important to have a song for this situation too. If their resignation speech is music to your ears, the best tune to listen to is, you guessed it, Pharrells Happy. This song would be best listened with earphones at your desk, so you can look around and imagine how great its going to be when they arent there anymore. Careful as it  is so upbeat and catchy, youll just need to be mindful not to clap along as your coworkers may cotton onto the fact that you are over the moon at the news, and we know how important it is to remain professional at all times. 5. An  employee behaves badly Listen to: I Knew You Were Trouble by Taylor Swift You knew it, they were dodgy  from day one. Nothing helps us vent  frustration  more than saying  I told you so. While acknowledging to yourself that you were right from the very start wont  solve anything, it will help reinforce that you have  killer instincts and teach you to trust your gut next time. 6. Your budget to hire is slashed I gotta Get Thru This Daniel Bedingfield I recommend the acoustic version  as  its a little more stripped back and showcases raw emotion.  A bit of anger also seeps through in his tone here, which aligns itself nicely with how youre probably feeling now youre not getting that extra set of hands to help you out at work. 5 Myths about Hypnosis busted, and the truth revealed

5 Myths about Hypnosis busted, and the truth revealed Fascinating, scary, mysterious, intriguing, magic, interesting.   These are a few terms people use to describe hypnosis. If something is described and related to with these words, myths about it cannot be dodged. And there are numerous myths about hypnosis floating around. Hypnotherapy is widely accepted now and is being used as a way to help patients with numerous disorders and problems. The formal study of the subject is being taken up by many students around the world. It is a beloved and famous subject in Australia.   This clearly reflects when we look at the vast numbers of hypnosis courses in Sydney. Despite it all, awareness about hypnosis seems to be lacking. People believe in the myths without double checking them. We are no ASIS, but we have taken up the mission of exposing 5 myths about hypnosis that have been floating around for quite some time now. Let’s start and set things straight. Once and for all. 1) Hypnosis is mind control The most common and widely believed myth is that a hypnotist can control your mind. If it were true, can you imagine how the number of “stupids” would have gone down? Do you see that happening? The truth is that you don’t loose control over your mind. The hypnotist doesn’t control your mind, s/he just helps you to relax and concentrate better. As you become extra responsive to the suggestions, the hypnotist only suggests you what you want. Don’t worry, even while hypnotized, the moral compass is in the direction it has always been. 2) Hypnosis means sleep We can understand how this one started. The Greek word, hypnoo, in which the word hypnosis finds its origins, means put to sleep. Though understandable, the confusion is totally a myth. Hypnosis makes a person very peaceful and concentrated. A hypnotized person may look like s/he is asleep because her/his eyes are shut, and s/he is in a very calm trance. The brainwaves of a hypnotized person dont show any similarity with those of a sleeping person. 3) Hypnosis can help you retrieve long lost memories Hypnotists are no magicians or superheroes without a cape. If you believe that being hypnotized can assist you in retrieving your long forgotten memories, you need to cut down on your dose of TV and movies. The truth of the matter is that even through hypnosis, you will only remember what you remember. With the amplified concentration, you can remember things more vividly, but that is about it. 4) Hypnotists can get you to do whatever they want If that is the case, you might want to stay in the good books of every hypnotist; you never know what might be coming. Thankfully, that is totally a cooked up story with no truth in it whatsoever. Your hypnotist cannot make you do anything you are not willing to do; you still have control over your mind. People just do silly things because they are willing to, and since they are in a state of much less inhibition, they allow themselves to do it. And rest assured, you won’t spill out your secrets.   You can lie during hypnosis. 5) Only “weak” people can be hypnotized Do you believe in the earlier mentioned myth that the hypnotist can make the hypnotized do the silly thing, but you are not afraid because you think you are “strong” and can’t be hypnotized? Wrong, again. The process of hypnotism depends on the efficiency of the hypnotist. It doesn’t matter if you have a high IQ or low, anyone can be hypnotized. There you go. You are now much more equipped with the “correct” knowledge about hypnotism. Happy to break the news to you.   Rule the world now.

Balancing a Healthy Diet as a Working Professional

Balancing a Healthy Diet as a Working Professional For working professionals, balancing a healthy diet and exercise regime with a busy career isn’t always an easy task. Not everyone has the time to batch cook healthy meals to take to work, and it can be all too tempting to pop to a local cafe or fast food outlet for a quick yet unhealthy bite to eat for your lunch break. Pair that with a mostly sedentary office job, and you have the perfect combination for feeling unfit, gaining weight, and losing energy. So, if you’ve decided that it’s time to do something, here are our top tips for balancing a healthy lifestyle with your busy working life. Use Meal Replacement Shakes: Meal replacement shakes are easy to make and packed full of all the essential nutrients that you need, enabling you to get a healthier and more balanced diet without the need to worry about preparing your meals every day. Ideally, a nutritional shake mix can be taken for breakfast and lunch, and then followed up with a healthy dinner option. Make sure that you opt for a shake that’s designed to replace a meal many regular protein shakes are not. Stretch Your Legs: If you spend all day sitting at your desk, this can certainly contribute to an unhealthy lifestyle. It’s not good to sit for prolonged periods of time this will slow down your metabolism and make it easier for you to gain weight. Instead, try and get up to stretch your legs regularly a quick walk around the office to see how your colleagues are getting on every so often can do you a world of good. Most workplaces encourage healthy lifestyles and won’t mind you getting up and moving every now and again as long as it doesn’t affect your work. Take Healthy Snacks: Snacking at your desk can be a real trap for working professionals if you have a lot of work to get through, it can be much easier to take a sandwich or bag of chips to your desk and keep on going. If eating at your desk is unavoidable, then pay attention to the type of foods that you’re eating nuts, fruit, and protein bars will keep you fuller for longer and give you the energy that you need to work to your full potential. Avoid foods that are heavy in carbohydrates or sugar whilst tasty, the energy you get from them won’t last long and you’ll end up hungry again quickly. Drink More Water: Lastly, always having a bottle of water at your desk can make a big difference to your health. Instead of sipping on coffee or sugar-laden energy drinks, make sure that you are properly hydrated by giving your body the two liters of water that it needs throughout the day. If your office doesn’t already have one, why not speak to your boss about getting a water fountain? If you found these tips helpful, we’d love to hear from you in the comments!

Sleep Your Way To Success How Sleep Affects Productivity

Sleep Your Way To Success How Sleep Affects Productivity Did you know that sleep has been cited as the primary cause of low productivity in the workplace? Similarly, that sleeping less than 5 hours over a few consecutive nights can cause equivalent levels of impairment to that of someone who is over the drink drive limit? Sleep (or a lack of) plays a larger role in our ability to ‘get things done’ than many of us think and making mistakes or general poor performance at work can often be attributed to the number of hours we spend in bed each night. If you want to succeed at work (or even work your way towards that well earned promotion), you need a good night’s sleep, however it’s often easier said than done, especially given the stresses and strains of everyday life. In fact, many would say that we often end up in a vicious circle, with us not being able to sleep because of work yet unable to work because we can’t sleep! Believe it or not, sleep doesn’t have to be something you only dream of and by making a few small lifestyle changes, you’ll find your productivity levels increase significantly in no time at all. The team over at SleepyPeople.com recently published an infographic which looks at not only how sleep affects productivity but also how you can ensure you get a great night’s sleep and it’s something we wanted to share in the hope that it helps at least a few of you to improve your output at work and work towards your career goals!

The graduate guide to working abroad - visas, work permits and more

The graduate guide to working abroad - visas, work permits and more #LifeGoals dont come much better than bagging your dream job in your dream country. I mean, the UK is great and all, but being able to do a job you love while absorbing the culture of another country makes for a much better morning commute. However, working abroad isnt always easy to achieve. Youve got to find a job for starters, and then theres work visas, immigration laws and living arrangements to think about. It is a daunting process, but it can be done. Weve put together the ultimate guide to help you achieve your working abroad dreams. Common work sectors So first things first, you need to decide what exactly youre going to do when you head abroad. Some industries are much easier to get into when looking for work in different countries, depending on how competitive they are, so you need to know if, based on your skills, qualifications and career goals, this is actually going to be feasible. Here are some of the most popular industries for those seeking work abroad: Finance and Consultancy These thriving, global industries offer vast opportunities for working in foreign markets. However, its rare to get into the business originally by securing a job abroad. Youll most likely secure a role in a multinational UK-based company, and get your ticket to work abroad that way. Digital freelancers In recent years there has been a huge rise in remote working. These are people who make their living from the comfort of their laptop, without having to secure a full-time job. This can be from freelance work such as journalism, design, coding, or blogging/social media. However, this is a super competitive way to earn a living, so its best to get your mini business established before you get on the plane. Teaching You dont need a background in education or knowledge of a second language to be able to teach English abroad; its open to pretty much anyone. However, you will need accredited TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification. This involves taking a four-week course to receive the necessary training in planning and delivering lessons, and cultural awareness. Tourism Working in the tourism industry is often a really easy way of finding employment abroad. You could work in leisure or hospitality, or as a tour guide or promoter. The salaries arent the most lucrative, and youll often be expected to work long hours, but youll also be guaranteed to have bags of fun, soaking up another culture and helping others to do the same. Volunteering So this isnt strictly speaking working abroad as its unpaid voluntary work, but if youre just looking to head abroad for a short period of time, this can be a worthwhile experience. You can work in communities, helping to care for the vulnerable or improve amenities, or you can work in environmental sustainability, helping to protect some of our most precious natural habitats. Just be aware that some of these programmes can be pretty costly, running into the thousands of pounds. Plus youll likely have to pay for flights, so hunt around for the best deal. Countries to aim for But where to go? Theres a whole world out there, and deciding where to uproot your life to is a big decision. Europe is a great option as (at the moment, pre-Brexit), EU nationals have the right to work in any EU state without any complicated visa requirements and restrictions. However, people are often put off working in other EU countries because of potential language barriers. Graduates often head to the likes of Australia, New Zealand and Canada where this isnt as much of a problem. While these countries are great for finding short-term work, they do have quite tough visa restrictions, so dont get your heart set on emigrating permanently. For example, Canadas Working Holiday Visa allows you to work in the country for up to two years in any industry. If you want to stay permanently, youll need to apply for a Work Permit through an employer. Similarly, in Australia you can apply for a Working Holiday visa which allows you to live and work in the country for up to year, extendable to two years if you complete a work placement in a understaffed industry such as agriculture. But if you want to stay permanently youll need sponsorship from a company in an in demand sector. The USA has incredibly stringent visa requirements, and no working holiday scheme, so youll need to have a job offer in place before you even think about heading out there. Other Eastern countries, such as Japan and Singapore, are also popular with graduates and offer working holiday visas. Just make sure to do some thorough research beforehand. Pros and cons Working abroad might sound like a dream, but there are also some downsides. Here are our pros and cons. ProsCons You'll gain valuable work experience and skills that you can apply to your future career. The stress and expense of moving your belongings can be a pain. Living somewhere different will help satisfy you wanderlust.Language and cultural barriers can be difficult to negotiate in certain countries. You'll be able to network with a wide range of global contacts. Depending on which country you choose to go to, living conditions may or may not be better. Depending on your industry and/or role, you could receive a higher salary. The paperwork and hassle of applying for visas and work permits is often stressful. You'll gain a unique set of skills which could leave you first in line for a promotion if/when you return home.People often feel homesick when living far away from family and friends. Need to knows So you know which country you fancy moving to, and what career path you want to take. But jumping on that plane without adequately preparing yourself beforehand is only going to lead to disaster. Theres lots to take into consideration to make sure you settle into your new country without any hitches. Here are just a few key pointers. Health The UK has arrangements with most European countries, so you dont need to pay for healthcare when visiting. Just remember your EHIC card. However, in many other countries you will have to pay, so make sure youre not caught out. Finance Were not even going to attempt to go into the full complexities of the financial implications of moving abroad but there are a few things to be aware of. Firstly, a lot of countries will expect you to prove you have a certain amount of money in your bank account for a certain length of time as a requirement for entry. Just make sure youve got enough tucked away. You might also need to continue paying tax or National Insurance contributions, and moving abroad might also affect your pension. Accommodation Finding somewhere to live permanently when you land in a new country can be tricky, especially if theres a language barrier. Make sure you dont sign any contracts that you dont understand, and seek legal advice when necessary. Working in a foreign country is a once in a lifetime opportunity, to see the world and immerse yourself in a different culture whilst also gaining valuable work experience and boosting your future employability. It might involve a fair bit of stress and paperwork, but its an experience youll likely never forget. Connect with Debut on  Facebook,  Twitter,  and  LinkedIn  for more careers insights.

How To Connect With Your Target Employers

How To Connect With Your Target Employers How To Connect With Your Target Employers A slew of questions came in after a recent presentation on resume writing. Most of them were specifically related to the participants job search. But one stood out for its relevance to everyone who’s looking for a new opportunity. The question was, “How do I get in front of the employer?” Of course, the short answer is network your way in. But how? Here are a few ways to connect with people at your target employer. Facebook Today many companies have corporate Facebook pages. This is a place where you may be able to find job postings and maybe even connect with recruiters. Some companies have pages specifically to reach out to potential candidates. A review of Citibank’s Citi Jobs page found several positons and information about their presence at a career fair. LinkedIn Start by “following” your target companies on LinkedIn. Many companies post a mix of information. Most of them post jobs on their LinkedIn company page. A look at DIAGIO’s  corporate LinkedIn showed several fun posts and a link to apply for their Global Graduate Program. Don’t forget about your connections. See if you are already connected to someone who’s connected to the company. To find new connections search LinkedIn for alumni from your university. Often other alumni are willing to connect to you because you went to the same school. Twitter Don’t dismiss the value of Twitter. A lot of recruiters, including corporate recruiters, hang out there. Find your target company on Twitter and follow its handle or handles. Many company recruiters have handles like @recruitercompany. It’s easy to tell if the posts from these handles are done automatically or by a real person. If there’s a person there, you can easily engage with them. Friends Family Who has more invested in helping you than your friends and family? Want to work at a particular company, ask them if they know anyone at your target company. Your cousin’s new boyfriend may work at your target employer. He may even know the hiring manager for your “dream” job. Being referred by a valued staff member can increase your chances of getting hired substantially. Having your resume, or even your name, passed on to someone working at your target employer can make a difference too. While you may still have to submit an online application, having someone on the inside helping to push you forward can make all the difference.
